Moline, IL — It may soon become illegal for anyone under the age of 18 in the state of Illinois to tan at indoor tanning salons. The legislative committee has passed a proposal dubbed “tan ban,” while two other bills sit before the Illinois House of Representatives urging the same legislative action, reports WQAD.com.
Many tanning salons and tanning advocates contend that there are enough restrictions on teens and indoor tanning.
The laws currently state that a minor must have parental consent to tan in Illinois. In addition, half the State of Illinois passed a 10 percent tax on all tanning services.
Salon owners maintain that these regulations—if passed—are going to continue to hurt business, as teens are nearly half of their business.
The “tan ban” was drafted over concerns of skin cancer risks, which can lead to deadly skin cancer like Melanoma.
The teen “tan ban” has passed out of Illinois' Human Services Committee and is now awaiting debate on the House floor, WQAD reports.
