Palatka, FL—A collision between a motorcyclist and a child on a bicycle left the biker dead, and the child critically injured on Monday, January 16, 2012. The fatal motorcycle accident occurred around 6 p.m., at the intersection of 18th and Washington streets, reported First Coast News.
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported that 40-year-old Elijah Hayward was traveling westbound on Washington Street when he collided with a 6-year-old boy, who was riding a bicycle along northbound 18th Street. The impact of the crash ejected both the motorcyclist and the child from their rides.
It is unknown what caused the motorcycle and the child to collide at this time.
Neither the biker nor the child was wearing a helmet at the time of the wreck.
Responding emergency crews rushed Hayward to Putnam Medical Center, where his injuries proved fatal and he was pronounced dead.
The child was transported to Shands Gainesville for treatment of his critical injuries. The nature of his injuries is unknown at this time.
Investigations into the motorcycle accident are underway.
